Your level of comfort and productivity while staying in a serviced office suite will be largely determined before you even pay the rent and move in. Historical pricing is just that … a price for a particular point in time. No one knows the current price unless it is estimated again on better and faster equipment. The historical price may be a good starting point, but effective cost estimating systems actually do more than provide a historical template. They help track data and update information quickly, reducing errors through built-in formulas and much more. Also, with smarter customers wanting more information and better answers, it can be rather time-consuming trying to effectively defend someone else’s guesstimate, let alone your own. Guesstimates become liabilities which cost money and… you run the risk of losing the confidence from your customer which can lead to more lost sales and ultimately … lost customers. We have found that by not relying on historical pricing you have a much better chance of consistently beating your competition while attaining higher profits.

“DELIVER THE QUOTE FIRST AND THE JOB IS OURS”

There have been many successful economies where this example has performed well. While being quick to deliver a quote is certainly one determining factor, you might find your smart customers also want more than just speed. They want accuracy, consistency and the ability to update the quote with a quick response from you. They may want to change features, swap a material, modify quantities, and/or substitute purchased parts. And they should expect a quick and consistently accurate response to their update request. Most guesstimates lack critical knowledge and supporting information which can create delay problems in their response. This can lead your customers to your competition for higher quality estimating or lower pricing.

As you or your organization go through your different stages and transitions, stop and acknowledge the various successes that you accomplish along the way. Do not just wait for the big end result – you could miss out on some amazing “smaller” masterpieces along the way.

So often when we look at a successful person or organization, we tend to think of his/her/its success in terms of “Ah, she has finally arrived. She is now successful.” What we often overlook is that that person’s or organization’s “ultimate” success probably came in clear stages of success. The famous 20th century artist, Pablo Picasso, is a good example of this process.

Ultimately, Picasso is most known for his pinnacle style, Cubism. In Cubism, Picasso viewed the form, e.g., a human body, not in the way we see it in the real world, but instead, in terms of geometric shapes. He then rearranged those geometric shapes, purposefully camouflaging the forms in the geometry with a monochromatic palette.

However, Picasso did not start out in Cubism. Trained early in Spain, he later went through several STAGES in his artistic evolution before arriving at Cubism. For example, from 1901 to 1904, Picasso’s style manifested a strong sense of melancholy and poetic nuances in what has been called “The Blue Period.” The Blue Period also marked the transition in his style from classicism, in which he was strongly trained and accomplished, to the abstract style of his later cubism.

One of his works from this transitional pre-Cubist Blue Period was a 1903 painting, best known as “The Absinthe Drinker,” although formally named “Portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto.” This work is very popular now in the 21st century, often reproduced in pop culture forms, such as greeting cards, bookmarks and even t-shirts. Christie’s auction house sold “The Absinthe Drinker” in London in 2010 for $56.63 million. Not a bad chunk of change for a painting that was done in one of an artist’s evolving stages! By the way, the painting was sold by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s charitable foundation with proceeds going to its work promoting the arts. Ah, the arts supporting the arts…gotta’ love it!

Pay closer attention to the smaller successes that occur in your own transitional phases or those of your organization. By focusing on and acknowledging them, you will be less likely to let some of your own “lesser” masterpieces slip by unnoticed.

If you ship a lot of parcels on a regular basis then you will know the importance of having a reliable parcel courier. If you are using a next day parcel courier then the chances are that is for the very relevant reason that you need your parcels sending to your customers by the next day. So if they are late in collecting them, or late in delivering them then this may cause you problems.

Late collections by couriers are actually down to people just like yourselves e.g. other customers. As an example if the customer that has booked a 3 pm pick up before your pick up at 4 pm, and they do not have the parcel ready in time and, then the courier has to wait 5 or 10 minutes for them to finish packing the parcel up, then delays occur.

The problem is if this happens at just a few collection points each day then the knock on effect by the end of the day can be half an hour, or an hours delay in the collection service.

This then causes a compounded problem in that they may be part of a nationwide network, and to get your parcel delivered to another part of the country they may have to get to another depot by a certain time, if not the van that your parcel was due to be changed to, to complete the latter part of its journey may have already left.

If this happens then your parcel will sit in that depot for an extra day, meaning your customer will not get the next day delivery service that they have paid for.

If this happens the customer is likely to ask for their money back for the delivery element of their purchase. Yet if you were late in packing the goods then you may have no comeback with the parcel courier at all.

However if your parcel is ready for collection on time and the courier turns up late, then this is not your fault. However this will happen from time to time and be unavoidable e.g. traffic problems or accident delays.

Yet a good parcel courier will phone you to let you know of such a delay and give you a new estimated pick up time, they can now do this quite easily when you phone up to ask where the van is. This is because the majority of couriers now use real time parcel and van tracking systems.
